The headline walks for the Spring 2010 festival will be four days of linear walks,
following in the footsteps of Alfred Wainwright on his Pennine Journey through Tynedale
In
1938, AW undertook a long walk from Settle, travelling north through Swaledale, Wensleydale,
Teesdale, Weardale and Tynedale, en route for Hadrian’s Wall. He returned south
via Haltwhistle to Alston, Soulby, Sedbergh and Ingleton to Settle again.
We plan to follow in his footsteps for the Tynedale section of the journey. We will use public footpaths more often than Wainwright did; he often walked on quiet country roads.
His book “A Pennine Journey, the story of a long walk in 1938” makes fascinating reading, writing as he did on the eve of World War II.
A new book, “A Pennine Journey, From Settle to Hadrian’s Wall in Wainwright’s footsteps” will be available ahead of publication for walkers on Days 1 and 2 of the Wainwright walks.

Eric Robson will be opening the 15th walking festival. He will meet walkers in Blanchland on the first day of the Wainwright walks
(see below).
