Wainwright Day 4: Park Village to Alston
Day 4 of the Wainwright walks followed his tracks as he turned back towards home from Hadrian’s wall and walked to Alston. We started at Park Village and worked our way past Featherstone Castle towards Lambley where we picked up the Maiden Way, the old Roman road. The dry spring made conditions underfoot ideal and progress was at a lively pace. We lunched in the sunshine amongst the daffodils at Knarsdale before Marj took a picture of the gallant folks who had done all four days.
We reached Slaggyford where everyone endured another of Harry’s reading from AW’s book and learnt how attractive he found Slaggyford despite its name and how he was given tea there before the final leg to Alston. The route took us past Kirkhaugh church, where we had a quick tea stop and heard Wainwright’s thoughts on its architecture.
We made it safely to Alston before the railway car park closed for the night, and hard as it may be to believe, almost the entire party headed for the Cumberland Inn for a quick pint or two.
