Fifteen walkers participated on a warm sunny day, just right for building up a thirst!
The “Roman Chariot” arrived in good time to transport the group to the start of the walk at Birdoswald. It got off to an inauspicious start, with the leader immediately taking a wrong turn. Much mickey taking!
The route generally is moderate with gently undulating hills and good views all around. The first stop was at the Samson Inn in Gilsland – fortunately open this time! The opportunity was taken to visit Thirlwell Castle before descending to Greenhead. A good lunch was provided at the Greenhead Hotel, and a pint or two was enjoyed by all.
The final section took us through a little used footpath adjacent to the A69 to reach
the third stop at the” Blenkinsop Castle”.
We were in good time to catch the more modern conveyance back to Haltwhistle. Here the group broke up and only three managed to visit the final stop at the “Black Bull” – much to the chagrin of the landlord.
We enjoyed a pleasant walk in good company.
