Walk 11: Featherstone – A Castle and a Camp

Start Point: Featherstone Castle

Date: April 30, 2026

A delightful walk following the River South Tyne and a stretch of the Pennine Way followed by a rare chance to take a one-hour tour of Grade 1 listed Featherstone Castle, guided by its current custodians.

Located just 4 miles southwest of Haltwhistle, Featherstone’s history dates back to the 11th century, but is probably best known locally for being the location of the notorious Camp 18 after the Second World War, where 4,000 senior German officers were held and assessed before they could be repatriated. Tea and coffee will be provided. There is no charge for the tour, but donations would be welcome.
