Walk 17: ‘Wall Across Northumberland’ Day 2

Start Point: Haltwhistle Market Place

Date: May 3, 2026

Day 2 - From Port Gate to Housesteads Roman Fort

Our coach takes us from Haltwhistle to yesterday’s end point at Stagshaw roundabout.

We briefly join St Oswald’s Way and then Hadrian’s Wall National Trail, past the battle site of Heavenfield AD 633, (Northumberland victory!), to descend sharply to cross the River North Tyne at Chollerford.  We ascend again and pass some excellent sections of wall and the remains of a Roman temple at Brocolitia.  Towards the end of today’s walk we see the first of the Wall’s ‘loughs’ at Broomlee before meeting our coach at Housesteads car park.
